WALKING TOURS HIGHLIGHT MORE THAN 100 YEARS OF HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE IN DOWNTOWN WEST PALM BEACH
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (December 28, 2006)- The Historical Society of Palm Beach County and Fidelity Federal Bank & Trust will once again host the popular Downtown West Palm Beach History Strolls, free guided walking tours of the area's historic buildings and landmarks. The History Strolls will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday Jan. 12, Jan. 26, Feb. 9, Feb. 23, March 9 and March 23. Donations benefit the Historical Society of Palm Beach County.
Led by local architect and historian, Rick Gonzalez, AIA, of REG Architects, the tours take participants on a journey through the eclectic Clematis Street Corridor's development and unique architectural styles, from the pioneering days of the early 1900s and the real estate boom of the 1920s, to the continued revitalization present today. Highlights include the Fine Arts District; the Cuillo Theatre; West Palm Beach's first "skyscraper," the Comeau Building, built in 1925; the vernacular-style Harris Music Lofts, built in 1902; and the Clematis Waterfront, which is slated to once again become a centerpiece of the downtown area. Gonzalez will also point out one of West Palm Beach's most important landmarks, the 1916 Courthouse located on South Dixie Highway. The structure is currently being restored to its original, neoclassical grandeur. Once completed, the building will become home to the area's first countywide history museum, operated by the Historical Society of Palm Beach County.
The Downtown West Palm Beach History Strolls will begin and end in the courtyard of Fidelity Federal's downtown headquarters, located at the corner of Datura Street and Narcissus Avenue in West Palm Beach. Space is limited, so reservations are required and must be made in advance. If a tour is cancelled due to the weather, reservations will be rescheduled for the next available tour.
