AUTHOR ALEX KERSHAW ATTRACTS CROWD FOR HISTORICAL SOCIETY LECTURE
PALM BEACH, Fla. (November 6, 2006)-The Historical Society of Palm Beach County kicked off their seasonal lecture series with best-selling author and audience favorite, Alex Kershaw. Almost 100 guests packed Bethesda-by-the-Sea to hear Kershaw discuss his latest book, The Few: The American 'Knights of the Air' Who Risked Everything to Fight in the Battle of Britain. Those in attendance including Philip Whitacre, Helen Cluett, Robert Ganger, Mark Elhilow, Sandra Krakoff and George Greenberg.
Kershaw's never-before-told story chronicles seven determined American pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain in 1940, violating unmistakable orders from their country in order to help save England from the Nazi invasion. They lied and maneuvered their way into the Royal Air Force, defied their country's neutrality laws, risked their citizenship and their lives to fight side-by-side with England's finest pilots as the 'knights of the air.'
Kershaw is also the author of the best-selling books The Bedford Boys and The Longest Winter, and the biographies Jack London and Blood and Champagne: The Life and Times of Robert Capa.
The Historical Society's lecture series continues on Thursday, January 18 with James D. Snyder discussing his most recent book, A Light in the Wilderness: The Story of Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and the Southeast Florida Frontier. Marc Wortman will discuss The Millionaires' Unit, on Wednesday, March 7. All lectures are free and open to the public, and are generously underwritten in part by Pioneer Linens and Northern Trust.
