THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF PALM BEACH COUNTY HOSTS LECTURE FEATURING ENVIRONMENTAL SPEAKER MICHAEL GRUNWALD
PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 17, 2006) — The Historical Society of Palm Beach County hosted the launch event for Washington Post award-winning reporter, Michael Grunwald’s first book, The Swamp: The Everglades, Florida, and the Politics of Paradise. The book explores the remarkable history of the Everglades, once considered a “liquid wasteland” and now regarded as a national treasure. Grunwald described the destruction and possible resurrection of the Everglades, the saga of man's abuse of nature in southern Florida and his unprecedented efforts to make amends.
The lectures, underwritten by Pioneer Linens and Northern Trust, have drawn hundreds to the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea since they began in October. This season’s fascinating lineup has included Kelly Reynolds, author of Henry Plant: Pioneer Empire Builder; Eliot Kleinberg, author of Weird Florida II: In a State of Shock; Susan Sully, author of Casa Florida; and Lucia St. Clair Robson, author of Shadow Patriots: A Novel of the Revolution.
The Historical Society of Palm Beach County’s 2006-2007 lecture series will be announced in the fall. For more information, call the Historical Society of Palm Beach County at (561) 832-4164, or visit www.historicalsocietypbc.org.
