COMMUNITY FOUNDATION PROVIDES $5,000 GRANT TO FUND HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S HURRICANE AWARENESS EVENTS

PALM BEACH, Fla. (June, 2003)--- The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties awarded the Historical Society of Palm Beach County $5,000 to fund a series of educational activities in September to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the 1928 hurricane. The storm, which ripped through Palm Beach County on September 16, claimed 2,500 lives and devastated the local economy.

The activities and events, planned in conjunction with the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, the Storm of ’28 Memorial Garden Coalition and the Belle Glade, Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Loxahatchee River Historical Societies, will include lectures from renowned hurricane experts and authors; “Storm of ‘28” exhibits with original photographs of the devastation; yellow remembrance ribbons placed on key Palm Beach County buildings that survived the storm; and county-wide memorial services.

“This is the first time our county’s historical organizations have worked together to educate the public about such a significant event in our history,” said Loren Mintz, executive director of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County. “With the support and funding from the Community Foundation, a long-forgotten part of our county’s past can be revealed. Residents will finally have the opportunity to learn about the second-deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history, its devastating impact on our African-American community and its influence on the economic climate of the time.”

The Community Foundation's Grants Program provides support in seven major areas: the conservation and preservation of historical and cultural resources; arts and culture; education; environment; health and human services; community development; and human and race relations. Grant candidates submit a formal proposal detailing the needs of the organization and its programs, and recipients are selected based on the proposal’s alignment with the Foundation’s criteria, values and priorities.
