HISTORICAL SOCIETY HONORS WINTER ANTIQUES SHOW
COMMITTEE WITH APPEARANCE BY BBC TELEVISION’S JOHN
BLY
PALM BEACH, Fla. (March, 2004)—The Historical
Society of Palm Beach County honored its 2004 Palm Beach
Winter Antiques Show Committee and sponsors by hosting a
private reception featuring an intimate guest lecture from
John Bly, the acclaimed British antiques dealer, resident
furniture expert and contributor to the British Broadcasting
Corporation’s (BBC) “Antique Roadshow.”
Among the guests who attended the event at Mary Mahoney’s
Worth Avenue store were Winter Antiques Show co-chairs,
Jackie and Beau Breckenridge; honorary chair, Nancy Sexauer
Walsh; Bunny Whitacre; Edie Cary; Mary Mahoney; Melanie
and Chris Hill; and Skira Watson. Thanks to their efforts,
the Winter Antiques Show, Preview Party and lecture series
raised significant funds for the Historical Society and
its programming.
The event was a unique opportunity for guests
to meet with the renowned Bly, whose family has been antiques
dealers in Tring, Herfordshire, since the beginning of the
19th Century. Bly’s grandfather established the firm,
which specializes in fine furniture, paintings, tableware,
objects d’art and fine art, in 1891. Since that time,
it has developed a prestigious reputation for its knowledge
in designing and implementing period and contemporary room
settings and interiors. In addition to frequent lectures
throughout Britain, Europe and North America, Bly is a frequent
contributor to a variety of antiques and lifestyle magazines,
and produces his own ITV program, “Heirloom.”
He has written numerous books on his areas of expertise,
including Discovering English Furniture, Discovering
Hallmarks on English Silver and Miller’s Silver and
Sheffield Plate Marks. He is a Liveryman of The Worshipful
Company of Goldsmiths, a Fellow of the Royal Society of
Arts and has served as Chairman of the British Antique Dealers
Association.
