PALM BEACH COUNTY STUDENTS “DRAW” INSPIRATION FROM LOCAL HISTORY FOR ANNUAL ART CONTEST

PALM BEACH, Fla. (April 26, 2006)— The Historical Society of Palm Beach County named 10 talented local students as the winners of the first “Florida History Through Art” contest, an annual school program designed to inspire students to learn more about local and state history.  The winning students and their teachers were presented with a framed certificate and a gift certificate to Park Avenue BBQ & Grille during the Historical Society’s annual meeting and reception held at the Flagler Museum on April 3.

Developed by the Historical Society and the School District of Palm Beach County, the Florida History Through Art contest was launched in 2005 as another creative opportunity to enhance students’ understanding and appreciation for the local people, places and events that shaped Palm Beach County and Florida, while complimenting existing school district art programs.  The contest will be held annually and is open to all public elementary, middle and high school students in the county.  The Historical Society and the School District provide designated historical themes, from which the students are asked to draw, paint or illustrate an aspect from Florida’s past.   From the submitted illustrations, a panel of judges selects the first, second and third place winners at the elementary, middle and high school level.

This year’s designated historical themes were “Native Americans of Florida” for elementary students; “Past and Present Exploration” for middle school students; and “South Florida Architecture” for high school students.
