Historical Society of Palm Beach County

Education Programs

The educational programs and initiatives of the Historical Society are of primary importance to our mission of building an understanding and appreciation of local history in our children. It is our belief that school children who have an understanding of history, ecology, anthropology, and the environment build the best communities.

The partnership of the Historical Society, School District of Palm Beach County, and the Palm Beach Post has resulted in several exciting education programs for the children to learn and experience the history of Palm Beach County.

4th Grade Florida History Program
The Historical Society, School District of Palm Beach County, and the Palm Beach Post partnered to develop a Florida History curriculum for 4th grade. The tabloid, printed by the Palm Beach Post, covers the geography of Florida and Palm Beach County, Native Americans, Colonial, Territorial and Statehood periods, Pioneer Era, Flagler Era, Pre and post World War II to the present, and the diverse multicultural groups in Palm Beach County. A teacher’s guide is now available on CD. This program meets Florida’s Sunshine State Standards. The 4th Grade Florida History Program is available to private schools for a small fee.

4th Grade History in Your Own Backyard Program
The Historical Society, Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, School District of Palm Beach Country, and the Palm Beach Post partnered to develop History in Your Own Backyard Program to teach students about preservation and preserving history where they live. The tabloid, printed by the Palm Beach Post, discusses preservation of local historic sites, oral histories, living history programs, and architecture. The program meets Florida's Sunshine State Standards. It is available to private schools for a small fee.

Early Contact - A Special Exhibit Guide

This guide will help you explore our special exhibit, Early Contact, which is about Florida’s early Native Americans meeting Spanish conquistadors.  As you walk through the exhibit, think about what it would have been like to meet strange, new people in a new land far from your own.

7th Grade Palm Beach County History
and Civics Program

The Historical Society, School District, the Palm Beach Post, and other historical organizations partnered to develop a Palm Beach County History and Civics Program as part of a larger social studies curriculum for 7th grade. The tabloid, printed by the Palm Beach Post, covers the geography of Palm Beach County, Native Americans, pioneer era, transportation, agriculture, pre and post World War II to the present, the diverse multicultural groups in Palm Beach County, and civics. A teacher’s guide is available in print or on CD. The program meets Florida’s Sunshine State Standards. Traveling Educational Trunk Program (TETP)
The Seminole and Miccosukee Trunk
This traveling trunk is a great way for students to learn about the Seminoles and Miccosukees of Florida. A teacher's guide contains lesson plans, background information, and activities. The objects, arts and crafts, and resources will provide students with a better understanding of Florida's Indians. The students can handle all items in the trunk so they can touch real artifacts made by Seminoles and Miccosukees. Trunks are available to all teachers to use for a two-week period. Loans are on a first come, first serve basis. There is no charge for the use of the trunk. This program meets Sunshine State Standards.

Florida History through Art Contest
The Historical Society and the School District of Palm Beach County have partnered to institute a yearly art contest titled “Florida History through Art.” The art contest will add to and complement existing school district art programs at all levels. It will foster the student’s creativity and artistic abilities and will provide teachers an outlet to have student achievements recognized. Through research and detailed subject matter students will enhance their knowledge about state and local history, keeping history and culture alive through their participation in this event. The art contest is open to all public elementary, middle, and high schools. All artwork will reflect a central theme which is selected yearly and announced at the beginning of the school year. First, second, and third place winners and their teachers receive awards. Winners of the 2006/2007 Art Contest were announced at the Society's annual meeting in March.
